Dr Darvas has been involved in research on diseases of subtropical fruit trees since 1977 and achieved much in identification and control of major disease problems. Among his achievements are the invention of the avocado trunk injection; the discovery of H3PO3 (phosphorous acid) as the active ingredient for the control of Phytophthora root rot of avocados; the identification of the avocado Cercospora spot in South Africa; the finding that Armillaria is the cause of the serious litchi die-back and also the isolation and identification of Dothiorella dominicana as the cause of blossom blight on mangoes in South Africa. He confirmed the presence and damage done by Stromatinia gladioli on Gladiolus spp in this country. He reported some 10 new root rot pathogens and seven new fruit disease pathogens for the first time in South Arfica.
